kottabos

1 sense · Free VividLex dictionary · Thesaurus

  1. 1. An ancient Greek drinking game. Players were required to recline on couches, whilst in the middle of the room targets were set up. These included: 1. Small discs balanced on poles, which players attempted to knock off. 2. A bowl of water with smaller ones floating in it, which the players had to try and sink. 3. Each other. The basic idea was that the player took their drinking cup (Greek cups were two handled, and were called the kylix and karanthros), and then drank the wine in it until there was a small amount left in the bottom. The basic idea was to flick the dregs left at the bottom of the cup at the target. > The Tomb of the Diver shows scenes of [symposium] and kottabos. Source: ecdict
