upspeak

1 sense · Free VividLex dictionary · Thesaurus

  1. 1. Affliction affecting my in today's society not just teenagers where a person makes a question out of a sentence that isn't a question (or more simply speaks "up" at the end of a sentence). Huge part of most American and European accents. In some languages such as French or Spainish it is actually required as part of the accent but has seeped into the English language perverting the grammar of sentences, annoying the hell out of some and showing the widespread influence of US TV like Friends and Sex and the City on accents (particularly in the UK and Ireland) > Example 1: "Well our windfall would probably be 4000? By this time next year?" > Example 2: "Mom no way can I go out like that. I'd look, like, so..stupid?" > Example 3 "I'm Irish but because of Friends? And Sex and the City? I talk like I'm some kind of Valley Girl because of upspeak?" Source: ecdict
